Physico-chemical properties of Hantaan virus -¥°. Effects of chemicals -
Chung Ihn-Hwa

Abstract
Korean hemorrhagic fever(KHF) was taken a world-wide attention since about 3,000 KHF patients occurred for the first time in Korea in UN troops at Korean war in 1951, although some similar disease had previously been reported from Russia, Manchuria and other areas.

Recently in Korea several hundreds patients were admitted annually due to KHF, and in China twelve thousands populations suffered from hemorrhagic fever, and many occurrences were reported in Russia, Scandinavia and in Japan.

In 1976, Lee & reported the isolation of Hantaan virus, the etiologic agent of KHF. from the patients and Apodemus agarius coreae, and in 1978, Lee et al developed the method of serological diagnosis of KHF.

Yet htere is no report on the physico-chemical properties of Hantaan virus but with the Lee¡¯s fluorescent-antibody techuiqne, the study of the properties of Hantaan virus is possible.

The effects of chemicals on Hantaan virus were examined for the first time with tissuecultured cells and Apodemus agrarius coreae.

The results are summerized as follows:

1. The infectivity of Hantaan virus was contained in RNA component.
2. The lipid-solvents such as socium deoxycholate, ether, chloroform, aceton and benzene destroyed fastly the infectivity of Hantaan virus.
3. Chemical disinfectants such as virus to the Apodemus agrarius.
